The Craftsman and the Peddler Baskets
|
During the 1980's,
Barbara Chapman Sox
was introduced to the traditional style of basket making at
a Regional Home Extension Workshop. Hooked, she continued to
study basketry through the Watauga County Community School
program and attended Penland School of Crafts during the
summer of 1985. At Penland, she explored the various types
of materials and the infinite possibilities and styles of
basket making. Barbara took her study of basketry even
further by pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree at
Appalachian State University in Industrial Technology with a
Concentration in Crafts. In 1996, She retired from her full
time job as a Public Dental Hygienist and decided to make
baskets as her second career. In 2001, she studied with Flo
Hoope at Arromount Craft School. More recently, she has
developed her own signature style of basket making.
