I have been a professional potter since 1994. Since then, I have attended a regular schedule of Art Shows ranging from New Jersey to Florida. I am originally from the Philadelphia/New Jersey area, and am a 15 year resident of Boone, NC. The Blue Ridge mountains, where I now live, offer continuing inspiration for my pottery designs.
My work, with few exceptions, is a red stoneware, thrown on the pottery wheel. After the pots set up for a while, the excess clay is trimmed from the bottom, handles are applied, and the decorations are stamped in. I carve my own stamps. The pots dry completely and are then bisque fired in the kiln. After cooling, a glaze coat is applied. The pots can either be dipped or, for a more extravagant design, brushed on on a spinning pottery wheel. I also use a wax resist method on selected pots.
I originally learned the basics of ceramic construction at a community college several years ago. I study books and ceramics magazines, visit various museums and have attended a few workshops over the last 5 years. I consider myself self-taught, which creates an originality of style not found elsewhere. My work is designed to be practical and beautiful, with a quiet serenity realized through daily use.
