Lyn Soeder channels her artistic expression through the demanding medium of wood block printing.Using knives, chisels and gouges, she works a mirrored and negative image of her final design into a wooden surface.Carefully applying a coating of printing ink to the wood, she then must painstakingly roll and burnish rice paper over the block to capture the image in a print. The prints are definitely limited editions; Soeder seldom makes more than 25 copies of any of her carvings.

"The things I like to do are the things that please me.I don't see anything wrong in making an image that is pleasant to look at," says Soeder, who works in a naturalistic style. Her favorite subjects are still lifes and animals. She also uses the three-dimensional surface of the block itself to create embossings.

A North Carolina native, she has made Ashe County her home for the last 18 years. She has honed her printmaking skills over the last 20 years, studying with Noyes Long at ASU.She has won numerous awards at the Charlotte Woodcarving Show, held in the spring of the year. One of her prints traveled with "The Best of the West" a juried show that exhibited over the western counties of North Carolina.
