Hands Gallery Presents Rebecca Barwick Baskets

Appalachian Basketry of Rebecca Barwick at Hands Gallery

Boone, North Carolina — June 13, 2005

Hands Gallery, Boone’s oldest not-for-profit crafts cooperative, will present a show by basket maker Rebecca Barwick.

Barwick’s ribbed construction is a traditional Appalachian basketry technique, often seen in egg baskets. With the use of grapevine and honeysuckle frames, she weaves a variety of shapes – round, square and free-form pieces ranging from trays to wall baskets. “I like to use changes in color and weaving pattern to enhance the shape and form of each basket. Each one is a unique creation,” she explained.

Her “Woven with HeartStrings” baskets use color to reflect nature and accent the shape of her work, from earth tones to bold patterns, all hand dyed. Barwick has been working in the Hands Gallery since 1999. Her work was accepted into the gallery in 2001. “It is definitely a privilege to be a part of Hands Gallery. I respect all the artists who are members. Their creativity and high standards of professionalism are truly inspiring. The Co-op’s 30th Anniversary in August of this year marks a significant milestone in the successful history of this important Boone landmark.

Barwick’s show will be on display from June 17 to June 30, 2005. Hands Gallery is located in downtown Boone at 543 West King Street. The Gallery is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Their website is located at http://www.HandsGalleryBooneNC.com.
